PRIORITIES

Protecting Our Community

Sheriff Smith will continue to take a proactive approach on policing and have deputies respond to fully investigate residential burglaries, robberies, auto-thefts and all types of crimes.  As an experienced law enforcement leader, the Sheriff has expanded partnerships to better serve our community with a focus on directed enforcement and crime prevention.

Promoting Accountability and Integrity

As Sheriff of Santa Clara County, Laurie Smith has set accountability as a priority. Those who enter the law enforcement profession are called upon to hold themselves to the highest standard of trust and integrity.  Sheriff Smith will continue to exemplify personal integrity and maintain strict accountability for the 2,025 employees she leads at the Sheriff’s Office.

Advocating for Victims

Under Sheriff Smith’s leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has prioritized justice for victims.  The Sheriff will continue to aggressively pursue sexual assault, human trafficking and domestic violence cases. Violent crimes such as murder, rape, and assault will receive all investigative resources necessary to ensure justice as well as closure and support for victims and their families.

Safeguarding our Most Vulnerable

Santa Clara County is a diverse community faced with many issues.  Sheriff Smith has partnered with our schools to ensure schools are a safe and protected space for learning.  The Sheriff has also implemented specialized units dedicated to protecting our community from hate crimes and victims of Human Trafficking.  The Sheriff’s Office leads the nation in instituting an Immigration Fraud Unit to arrest those who prey on immigrant victims. She remains a recognized leader in the advocacy of women’s rights.

Addressing Mental Health Issues and Homelessness

Sheriff Smith has long been an advocate for our Mobile Mental Health teams. Additionally, the Sheriff will ensure that a clinician is partnered with a patrol deputy to respond to calls for service.  This will provide additional services in moments of crisis and avoid the criminalization of mental health issues.  The Sheriff will continue to implement Jail Reforms to provide re-entry services to inmates while they are incarcerated so they can integrate back into society while avoiding homelessness and further crime.

BIO

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith is a native of Michigan where she lived until completion of high school. In 1969 she relocated to San Jose, California to pursue higher education and begin her law enforcement career. Sheriff Smith has spent her entire professional career with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

While still an undergraduate, she began her public service career in 1973 when she was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff Matron, then the only full peace officer status position available to women. Until 1976, female sworn staff received the same basic police training as their male counterparts, but were only allowed to work in non-enforcement capacities. She was one of the first female deputies to perform patrol and undercover functions.

Laurie Smith graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Administration of Justice, and later received her Master’s Degree in Management from California Polytechnic University, Pomona. She is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the State of California Command College, the FBI National Executive Institute and the American Leadership Forum – Silicon Valley. She is currently a Master’s candidate at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Center for Homeland Defense and Security.

On December 15, 1998, Laurie Smith was elected to serve as Santa Clara County’s 28th Sheriff since the Office’s inception in 1850.  The first female Sheriff in California’s history, she has been consistently chosen for re-election through four additional terms to serve Santa Clara County’s 2 million residents.

Laurie Smith has received numerous honors and awards for her public service, and has an outstanding record in the California law enforcement community. She is a past-president of the California State Sheriffs’ Association and is a past Woman of the Year recipient by the California State Assembly.
